Kiwi Moments
At Collins Collective, we are dedicated to helping businesses unlock the potential of their employees through the CliftonStrengths assessment and fostering a positive, growth-oriented culture. One of the core values that we emphasize is the concept of "Kiwi Moments." But what exactly does that mean? Let me share a story that perfectly illustrates this value.
The Kiwi Story
Last year, my twin daughters were three years old and in preschool. One day, they came home, each grabbed a kiwi, and started eating it like an apple—skin and all. I was busy in the kitchen and immediately tried to stop them, exclaiming, "You can't eat the skin of a kiwi!" They insisted they could, but I went ahead and peeled the kiwi for them anyway.
The next day, the same scenario unfolded. Determined to prove them wrong, I quickly Googled it, only to learn that they were right—you can eat the kiwi skin. At that moment, I realized I had failed to demonstrate a growth mindset. A growth mindset would have allowed me to accept what my daughters said and be open to learning from them. Instead, I was caught up in the after-school tasks of a mother and made the quick and easy assumption that I was right and they were wrong.
What Are Kiwi Moments?
"Kiwi Moments" at Collins Collective represent those instances where we embrace a growth mindset. They are reminders that, no matter our age, position, or experience, we can always learn from others—even those who might have less perceived knowledge or power than us. It's about being open to new information, willing to change our minds, and recognizing the value in different perspectives.
The Importance of a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset, a concept popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. This contrasts with a fixed mindset, which holds that our talents and intelligence are static traits.
In a business context, fostering a growth mindset can lead to numerous benefits:
Increased Innovation: When employees feel comfortable sharing their ideas and are open to feedback, creativity flourishes.
Enhanced Learning: A growth mindset encourages continuous learning and development, which is crucial in a rapidly changing business environment.
Better Problem-Solving: Teams that embrace diverse perspectives are better equipped to tackle complex challenges.
Higher Engagement: Employees who believe in their potential for growth are more engaged and motivated.
Why Kiwi Moments Matter
While many people understand the importance of a growth mindset, it's often in the busy, routine moments that we forget to apply it. We may disregard the thoughts of those we perceive to have less power or knowledge, missing out on valuable insights and learning opportunities. Kiwi Moments remind us to stay curious, listen actively, and be willing to learn from everyone around us.
How Collins Collective Helps Businesses Foster Kiwi Moments
At Collins Collective, we integrate the philosophy of Kiwi Moments into our coaching and consulting practices. Here's how we help businesses cultivate a growth mindset:
CliftonStrengths Assessment: We use the CliftonStrengths assessment to help individuals and teams identify their unique talents. Understanding and leveraging these strengths encourages a growth mindset, as employees see how their abilities can be developed and applied in various contexts.
Training and Workshops: Our training programs focus on building a culture of curiosity and continuous learning. We teach teams to ask open-ended questions, seek feedback, and view challenges as opportunities for growth.
Strengths-Based Coaching: Through one-on-one and group coaching sessions, we guide leaders and employees in embracing a growth mindset. We help them recognize Kiwi Moments and apply the principles of curiosity and openness in their daily interactions.
Creating Safe Spaces: We assist organizations in creating environments where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives. By promoting psychological safety, we ensure that all voices are heard and valued.
Kiwi Moments are about more than just accepting that you can eat the skin of a kiwi. They represent a fundamental shift in how we approach learning and growth, both in our personal lives and in the workplace. At Collins Collective, we believe that by embracing these moments and fostering a growth mindset, businesses can unlock their full potential and achieve greater success.
So next time you're faced with a situation where you think you know the answer, pause and consider: Could this be a Kiwi Moment? Embrace curiosity, be open to learning, and you might just discover something new and valuable.
